Hook

Two rival storm-clans demand a ceremonial duel to settle an old feud—yet the chosen champions share a forbidden love. As thunder gathers and the winds remember ancient oaths, the party is drawn in as witnesses, attendants, or quiet interlopers. One sunrise, one ritual, and a choice that could either shatter tradition or forge a new covenant in the sky.

Pitch

High above the storm-scoured mesas of Velkar Spires, a feud older than memory is about to be settled the only way tradition allows: at dawn, on a sky-bridge of wind and lighnting, with steel and vows bared before the watching clans. You arrive on the eve of the duel, when banners snap like accusations and every ritual word carries the weight of history. THe storm is building, not just in that clouds, but in the hearts of those chosen to stand at the center of it. What no one is supposed to know is that the duelists are in love. As witnesses, attendants, or quiet meddlers, you'll be pulled into a night of whispered confessions, impossible choices, and oaths that may demand more than blood. By sunrise, someone must fall but whether it's a body, a tradition, or a belief Velkar has clung to for centuries is up to you. In this story, the wind listens, the sky remembers, and love might be the most dangerous vow of all.

Overview

Amidst the clouds, Velkar Spires rises as a chain of wind-carved mesas bound together by rope-bridges, sky-paths, and ancient agreements with the storm itself. Life here is governed by the belief that wind remembers promises: every oath spoken aloud is thought to echo through the Spires long after the speaker is gone. Velkar's storm-clans trace their lineage through feats of endurance and loyalty rather than blood alone, and when conflict threatens to fracture the balance, it is tradition, not mercy, that is trusted to resolve it. That tradition takes the form of the Stormpath Duel, a ceremonial combat fought at dawn on a narrow sky-bridge where wind, lightning, and witnesses converge. Such duels are not acts of rage but resolution, meant to bind an ending into the storm so the clans can move forward without lingering resentment. WHen word spreads that a long-simmering feud has reached this point, the Spires tense with anticipation, and the party arrives on the eve of the ritual, when banners are raised, attendants chosen, and the sky itself begins to coil. As preparations unfold, the PCs are drawn into the layered etiquette of Velkar: the careful language of clan honor, the subtle power of unspoken fears of what tomorrow may cost. Elders insist the duel must proceed exactly as prescribed, while retainers and wind-readers whisper of troubling omens. The duelists themselves remain distant, bound by expectation, yet the Stormpath seems to narrow whenever they pass one another...a sign that the wind is paying attention. The one-shot carries the party through a single charged night into a single decisive morning. Every conversation, vow, and intervention tightens the strain between duty and desire, pushing the story toward an inevitable confrontation - not just between the values Velkar has upheld for generations and the possibility of something braver. When the storm finally demands its answer, the PCs' choices will determine whether the Spires remember this duel as a necessary sacrifice...or the moment the wind learned a new kind of oath.

Player Principles

  • #### Let the Wind Hear You - Speak your intentions aloud: vows, doubts, challenges, and confessions matter in Velkar Spires. When you voice something openly, assume the world is listening and will respond, for good or ill.
  • #### Choose Meaning Over Safety - this story rewards bold emotional choices more than cautious optimization. Step into risk when it serves the heart of the scene, even if it complicates outcomes or places your character in tension with tradition.
  • #### Respect the Ritual, Then Decide What to Do With It - Learn the customs, honor the forms, and understand what is at stake before you try to break or bend anything. Defiance carries more weight when it comes from understanding rather than ignorance.
  • #### Protect Love...Even When It Isn’t Yours - You are not here to 'solve' the duel, but to witness and influence it. Act with care toward the bonds between others, whether that means defending them, challenging them, or helping them change without being erased.

GM Principles

  • #### Let Tradition Apply Pressure, Not Control Outcomes - Present Velkar’s customs, rituals, and expectations as heavy, ever-present forces but never as unbreakable rules. Tradition should demand something from the PCs, not decide the ending for them.
  • #### Make the Storm React to Emotion -The wind, lightning, and narrowing Stormpath are not random hazards, they respond to fear, hesitation, honesty, and resolve. Use the environment to echo emotional beats rather than to punish mechanically.
  • #### Give Every Authority Figure a Human Cost - Elders, wind-readers, and clan leaders should believe they are preventing catastrophe, not enforcing cruelty. Frame opposition as sincere conviction, so the PCs are always choosing between understandable positions rather than right vs. wrong.
  • #### Keep the Focus on the Dawn - Everything in this story moves toward sunrise. If play stalls, advance time, change the weather, or escalate ritual preparations. The duel is inevitable but what it becomes is always in the players’ hands.
