Hook

You received a letter sealed with a fractured scale of justice, promising redemption, fortune, or truth. It carried you across freezing seas to an abandoned observatory where a feast waits for ten, your host is missing, and that night a Voice in the ice names your secret crime aloud.

Pitch

Run a claustrophobic "the killer is among us" mystery where the real accuser is the island itself. Every guest arrives guilty of something, the frozen setting hoards and replays memory, and the Hope/Fear balance the table generates literally decides whether mercy or cold judgment wins. You control the pace through a possessed NPC pawn, deliver escalating supernatural horror, and let players choose confession and selflessness as the mechanics that break the cycle.

Overview

In the desolate northern seas beyond Gravenreach, where auroras whisper across the ice and daylight lasts mere hours, lies Frostmourn Isle -- a frozen tribunal of stone and sorrow. Long ago the Inquisitors of the Glass Courts used the island as a site of spiritual reckoning, experimenting with griefglass ore buried beneath the glaciers -- not to remember, but to weigh a person's sins. When their rituals spiraled out of control, the island was sealed and abandoned. Centuries later, a new group of strangers receives identical summonses -- each promising redemption, fortune, or truth, all bearing the same seal: a fractured scale of justice cast in frostglass. When their ship arrives through the freezing mist they find the observatory still standing and a feast prepared for ten souls, but their host, U.N. Owynne, is nowhere to be found. That night, beneath the dancing auroras, a Voice echoes through the frozen halls, accusing each guest of a mortal crime -- and as the temperature drops, the deaths begin. The campaign reskins the classic "ten strangers, one killer" mystery through Velthuryn's Aethergrave lore: griefglass becomes frostglass, translucent crystal formed from the frozen memories of the dead that hums when touched by guilt; the killer's summons come from an automaton Voice built to deliver Glass Court verdicts; and the aurora overhead acts as a shared conscience, flaring blood-red with Fear and burning blue-white with Hope.

GM Principles

  • #### Judgment Without Warmth - Play the island's justice as cold, not cruel. It simply is; it does not hate.
  • #### Memory as Ice - The colder it gets, the clearer the past becomes. Let frostglass and cold reveal buried guilt.
  • #### The Aurora as Conscience - Let the aurora brighten blue for selfless acts and dim toward red or black for selfish ones, a visible barometer of the group's Hope and Fear.
  • #### Play the Pawn with Nuance - When using the Puppeteered Pawn framework, portray the possessed NPC as sympathetic and complex, both victim and agent, never a cackling fiend.
  • #### Avoid PvP - Treat the possessed NPC as a boss encounter, not a duel; steer players toward saving or restraining rather than killing.
