Hook

As your party crests the last hill and Brackenmill comes into view, the seaside town shudders with impossibility. Down by the pier a fisherman screams, his hair whitening and his face crumpling into wrinkles before your eyes until he collapses into dust. A woman slips from the dock, drowns, and falls again and again. Above it all the Clockspire tolls thirteen, and every shadow in town freezes while its owner keeps moving. The villagers fix desperate eyes on you and beg: "Climb the Clockspire, or time itself will eat us alive!"

Pitch

This is a self-contained, reality-bending dungeon-climb where time is the antagonist. The town is a mystery box of temporal anomalies that seeds clues, and the Clockspire above is a living adversary of branching puzzle-chambers culminating in a boss fight against its broken creator. Lean hard on the Hope/Fear economy to bend chronology, give shadows a voice, and force the party to confront twisted versions of themselves. The whole thing builds to a genuine moral choice with world-scale consequences: order, freedom, or oblivion, none of them clean.

Overview

Time is unraveling in Brackenmill. The once-proud Clockspire, built to bring order to Velthuryn's fractured days, now tolls with discordant force. Hours stretch into lifetimes, moments repeat in endless cycles, and villagers slip in and out of existence. Children age into dust while others relive the same conversation endlessly. Shadows move before their owners, whispering futures that should not yet be known. At the heart of the disturbance lies Veyl, the Clockmaker, a clank genius whose griefglass-powered mechanism was meant to bind the rhythms of the Mortal Realm. Instead, his obsession fractured time into countless threads. Some say he still works within the tower, caught in a loop of invention and regret, half-machine and half-mad. The PCs are drawn into this unraveling reality, where the town itself is a puzzle to decode. They will face alternate versions of themselves, adversaries born of paradox, and the crushing weight of choices that reverberate across timelines. The climb up the Clockspire is both literal and symbolic: each chamber presents a trial of time, demanding sacrifice, cunning, and the strength to confront their own shadows. In the end, the PCs must choose whether to stabilize time, shatter it, or embrace chaos. None of the outcomes are without cost, and their decision will echo far beyond Brackenmill, perhaps across all of Velthuryn.

Player Principles

  • #### Embrace the Strangeness - Time in Brackenmill will not behave the way you expect, and that's the point. Lean into the oddness, repeat yourself if a loop demands it, and enjoy the tension of not always knowing what's real.
  • #### Let Shadows Speak - Your shadow may not follow your lead. It might whisper, move ahead, or mock you. Play along as if it were another version of yourself sharing the stage; sometimes it reveals truths you'd rather ignore.
  • #### Carry Hope, Fear, and Memory - Your choices ripple through loops and the tokens you spend matter. Use Hope to anchor yourself, protect others, or bring clarity to what's been lost. When Fear grows, let it color your roleplay.
  • #### Expect to Confront Yourself - The tower is a mirror, and you may face versions of yourself that are older, younger, or twisted by regret. When it happens, play into it: what do they envy about you, and what do you envy about them?

GM Principles

  • #### Make Time Unreliable - Time in Brackenmill should always feel slippery. Skip forward mid-scene, repeat dialogue, or freeze shadows to keep players unsettled. Use Fear to bend chronology and remind the table that no moment is ever guaranteed.
  • #### Give Shadows a Voice - Shadows act independently, mocking fears, replaying regrets, and hinting at futures. Treat them as characters in their own right, using them to foreshadow events or introduce paradoxical threats.
  • #### Pressure Hope & Fear - Hope and Fear are levers that drive the story, not background math. Let Hope stabilize time, anchor NPCs, or carry knowledge across loops; spend Fear to accelerate paradoxes, corrupt shadows, or force replays.
  • #### Treat the Tower as a Living Adversary - The Clockspire is not inert stone. It grinds, shifts, and hungers, its chambers reacting to Hope and Fear. This is Veyl's obsession made manifest, and the tower's moods reflect his broken mind.

Community Guidance

All Daggerheart communities are available. Seaborne, Loreborne, Orderborne, Ridgeborne, and Underborne each carry distinct advantages and vulnerabilities in Brackenmill's fractured time (see Featured Communities & Ancestries).

Ancestry Guidance

All Daggerheart ancestries are available. Clanks (kinship with the clank-built tower, risk of corrupted time infecting them), Elves (sensitivity to repeating moments, risk of being lost in loops), Faeries (at home in liminal chaos but mistrusted by villagers), Katari (resonance with the faltering moons and tempting destinies), and Galapa (living anchors of memory across resets) have unique ties to the campaign.

All Daggerheart classes are available.
