Hook

You arrive in Aurenhold for the Meridian Flare festival, where liquid-gold quills carve new law into the living Canon. But an empty violet-draped lectern stands where the celebrated Sage-Errant Liora Quillaris should be — declared dead of "sun-fever," her research sealed, her ashes already outbound on a caravan that hums with illicit resonance-ore, and the whispered rumor that "her ashes weigh too little." With three days until the Council vote, your curiosity drags you into a murder the whole city would rather forget.

Pitch

Run a non-linear murder mystery on a 72-hour clock, where clues — not corridors — gate progress: any single clue is suggestive, but only three corroborated proofs unravel the cover-up. A three-tiered conspiracy (a bureaucratic mastermind, a disgraced Echo-Warden assassin, a goblin smuggler-artist) stays mobile and reactive as the party triangulates across libraries, goblin boom-hostels, and time-slipped border patrols. The promise: intrigue over swordplay, where a Level-1 party's small choices ripple through continental law, and where the ending — public trial, covert strike, or catastrophic failure — is theirs to write.

Overview

Set in Aurenhold, capital of Lexharrow, where golden quills inscribe scholars' words into the ever-growing Concordic Canon that determines truth, legality, and memory across the state. On the eve of the decennial Meridian Flare festival, Sage-Errant Liora Quillaris is found dead of "sun-fever" — in truth murdered with rune-bound resonance dust to bury ledgers exposing a resonance-ore smuggling ring reaching the highest tiers of the Concord. Magister-Glossarist Sereth Calvaris, the mastermind, needs her silenced so his ore-trade commentary is ratified unopposed at the looming Council vote, granting him power to rewrite continental trade law. The party must trace Liora's lost research across libraries, guildhalls, and shadow-markets, navigate intrigue among scholars, goblin unions, and wardens of the Codex Fracture, and decide whether to preserve the Canon, rewrite it, or let it fracture into something new. Evidence is scattered across seven locales; only by cross-referencing at least three corroborated proofs before the 72-hour clock runs out can the heroes expose the conspiracy.

Player Principles

  • #### Be a fan of your character - Lean into your hero's stakes; each PC should own a personal connection to Liora's death.
  • #### Spotlight your friends - Clever social plays matter as much as blades; make room for every table-mate's strengths.
  • #### Build the world together - Fill in the ink-bright streets of Aurenhold and the wider Canon as you play.
  • #### Play to find out what happens - Follow the clues where they lead; failure can push the story into darker, broader arcs.
  • #### Hold on gently - Stay open to where the mystery takes you rather than gripping a single theory.

GM Principles

  • #### Choose, Don't Script - Introduce 2-3 complications based on where the party goes, then sprinkle others as consequences ripple outward.
  • #### Escalate, Don't Dead-End - Every obstacle offers an out (spells, bribes, duels, detours) so failure pivots the story rather than stalling it.
  • #### Maintain the 3-Clue Rule - No single clue is decisive and no twist destroys all evidence; the mystery stays solvable once any three proofs corroborate.
  • #### Layered Discovery - No single conspirator knows the whole plot; make the party triangulate facts across locations rather than follow a line.
  • #### Keep the Conspirators Mobile - Each longbright, relocate a conspirator one map node to reflect reactive counter-measures and sustain the clock's pressure.
  • #### Spotlight Rotation - Key each complication to a domain, class, or heritage so the whole table earns hero moments over the arc.

Community Guidance

Loreborne scholars/guild researchers (Well-Read advantage on history, culture, politics — ideal in libraries and courts; risk social tunnel-vision); Highborne aristocrats (Privilege advantage leveraging status with nobles; distrusted by Fleaspark goblins and Verge wardens); Orderborne soldiery (disciplined reputation opens Custodian bureaucracy; mocked for "regulation fever" in the Boom-Hostel Union); Wildborne woodfolk (Lightfoot advantage infiltrating quarantined stacks; fish-out-of-water in gilded lecture halls).

Ancestry Guidance

Featured heritages: Goblin (cultural cachet in Fleaspark and advantage bartering for rune-dust, but prejudice in Aurenhold's noble negotiations); Echo-Forged (attune to grief-glass memories and may auto-sense time-slips, but basins broadcast their emotions publicly); Human or Elf with academic roots (blend smoothly into scholar society, but less street cred in goblin districts).

Class Guidance

Investigation-friendly builds shine. Bard/Wordsmith excels at social duels and Procedural Rebuttal challenges; Wizard (Codex domain) can fact-check forged documents and counter Calvaris's rune edits (but resonance surges can scramble spells); Paladin/Guardian (Order domain) can invoke authority to bypass quarantine protocols (leaving a paper trail Calvaris can exploit); Rogue (Midnight domain) handles rooftop chases and lock-glyph tampering. All classes are viable — the campaign rewards clever social and investigative play.
