Overview
Aurenhold is Lexharrow's largest layered city and the seat of its scholarly establishment, built in characteristic strata of revision rather than expansion. It concentrates the state's institutional weight: the Luminous Archive's central holding, the Codex Wardens' Bastion, and the courts that adjudicate Canon-adjacent rulings. Lake Eldwin holds the floating archive known as the Noctuary. Two days' ride north lies the southern margin of the Codex Fracture.
Details
Aurenhold sits on the coastal high ground at the heart of Lexharrow, a city built in successive strata of civic design, each corresponding to a period of revision rather than territorial growth. When a theory supersedes another in Lexharrow, the older layer is not removed — it is annotated, redirected, or partially built over. Aurenhold is the most extreme expression of that principle. Staircases end in obsolete streets. Canals pass through the abandoned lecture halls of academies whose foundational arguments were overturned a century ago. Public squares preserve, in carved marginalia along their perimeter walls, the outlines of debates no longer considered sound. Visitors who attempt to navigate Aurenhold by map alone almost always arrive late, or at the wrong address, or at an address that no longer corresponds to its inscription.
The city is informally divided into several districts, each shaped by the institutions concentrated within it.
The Quill District is Aurenhold's working scholarly quarter. Private archivists, freelance recourse-clause attorneys, manuscript brokers, marginalia restorers, and the kind of independent scholars who do not draw a stipend from any one order keep workrooms here, often above the shops of binders, ink-makers, and resonance-stable paper merchants. Rents are high. Inkward Custodians are common. The district's reputation for discretion is professional rather than absolute; what is paid for is the form of confidentiality, not the substance, and most of its tenants understand the distinction.
The Lower Stacks extend beneath the city in eight catalogued levels and an unknown number of uncatalogued ones. The upper Stacks are open to Archive scholars by appointment. The lower Stacks are not. The deepest catalogued level, the Eighth, is sealed except to senior archivists working on Canon-adjacent material. Several scholars over the last century have filed travel papers for fieldwork while in the middle of cataloguing on the Eighth, and not all of them returned.
Lake Eldwin, in the city's southern bowl, holds the Noctuary: a floating wing of the Luminous Archive that anchors at four points along the lake's deep-resonance basin. The Noctuary is the institutional home of the Scholars of the Morphic Verses, who study books and texts that rewrite themselves through collective subconscious. The wing rises and falls slightly with the lake's seasonal currents, an architectural concession to the unstable nature of its holdings: a building that records changing texts must itself be willing to move. The Noctuary's nightshift, when most of its bibliomancers are on duty, is considered Aurenhold's quietest and most dangerous shift to walk past.
The Bastion is the Codex Wardens' central facility, an angular set of structures clustered around the Hall of Admissibility where the city's most consequential rulings are issued. The Bastion is also, by long-standing arrangement that no one will confirm in writing, the operational headquarters of the Codex Excisors. Carriages enter the Bastion's eastern court and unload through gates that the city's streetmaps do not show. Carriages leaving the western court tend to leave without their original passengers.
The Marrowgate Court is Aurenhold's principal civic court, where Canon-adjacent rulings are debated in public sessions that anyone may attend and a smaller number may speak at. Sessions can run for days. Verdicts, once issued, are stable for ninety days before becoming eligible for revision. During that ninety-day window, the verdict is treated as physical fact; afterward, it returns to provisional status. The court's library of suspended verdicts is one of Aurenhold's largest collections.
Beyond the urban core, the Aurenhold Approach is the city's northern gate-road, climbing out of the lake basin onto the plateau that rises toward the Codex Fracture. Two days' ride brings a traveler to a small frontier waystation marking the limit of stable jurisdiction. Beyond it, conflicting interpretations destabilize space in characteristic Lexharrow fashion, and the road becomes a record of every party that has tried to walk it: footprints from yesterday overlaying footprints from a season ago overlaying footprints that have not yet been made.
Aurenhold's relationship to the Codex Fracture is the central anxiety of its institutional life. The Archive maintains that the Fracture is contained. The Wardens maintain that it is being contained. The Excisors do not maintain anything publicly, but they have offices on the Approach. The city's residents, when pressed, will say only that the Fracture is closer than it used to be — and then change the subject.
During longbright, Solivar's angle sharpens the geometry of the Bastion, the Noctuary, and the older academies, making the city legible at a distance. During deepglow, the moons catch on the griefglass-inscribed surfaces embedded throughout walls, bridges, and plazas, and Aurenhold's marginalia — the carved revisions, footnotes, and overturned rulings written into the stone itself becomes faintly readable in mirrored moonfire. Tourists come for this. Scholars stay inside.
