The Abbot (Maker of the Pale)

The unseen hand behind the world

Other

A name that surfaces only in the deepest riddles and the oldest margins — a maker, spoken of as a dying man in some 'before' that came prior to the Pale, the Order, and the law of the Lowered Eye. No one living has seen him. The Drolleries remember him the way very old things remember: not in sequence or in words, but in posture, repetition, and the angle of a painted gaze. His presence is felt in the oldest text of all.

Description

In the theology of the Pale there is no Maker to speak of — only the voice of God in the forbidden text and the law that keeps anyone from hearing it directly. Yet the deeper Maren goes, the more insistently a single figure surfaces at the edges of the oldest riddles: a maker, a dying man, a 'before.'

The Drolleries in the margins remember him, in their fragmentary and oblique way, and the dying creatures of the deep gutters speak of a hand that once wrote and then stopped. Whoever he was, he is long gone, and yet the shape of his intention seems to lie beneath everything — as though the whole world were arranged around a purpose no one now alive was meant to understand.
