The Confessor
The oldest voice of the Order
Reckoned the oldest person in the Pale, the Confessor has held his office — for life, as the theology requires — longer than anyone living can remember. He summons novices with a strip of blank vellum folded three times, which means come immediately, and receives them in a chamber below the floors the maps admit to. He accuses no one. He simply knows things, and lets you feel that he does.
Description
The Confessor is a presence more than a man — ancient, unhurried, and utterly certain of his own authority. His summons is silent: blank vellum on the threshold, folded three times, and the fiction of voluntary compliance maintained with great care. He receives Maren in a room at the very base of the scriptorium tower, a room whose walls are covered, floor to ceiling, in text written directly into the stone.
He speaks in weights rather than accusations. He tells Maren that her old mentor was mistaken about several things, but not about her; that some believe what she is doing is the most dangerous act in the world's history, and some the most necessary — and that he will not say which he is. And then, unexpectedly, he tells her to be faster.
