Sunlash Coast
The Sunlash Coast is a land of brilliance and repetition where light strikes hard, shadows stretch long, and memory sometimes refuses to move forward. Once a chain of thriving port-states, the coast was forever altered during the Shattering when resonance storms fractured time as easily as stone. In some harbors, the same tide still arrives twice.
To outsiders, Sunlash is a place of trade winds, salt markets, and sun-bleached towers. To those who live here, it is a region defined by adaptation: sailors who navigate by remembered stars, merchants who price goods by probability rather than certainty, and communities that have learned how to survive when yesterday refuses to stay buried.
Sunlash does not fear change. It fears stagnation.
Geography & Travel¶
The Sunlash Coast follows a broken southern shoreline, where golden cliffs, coral-fringed shallows, and broad tidal flats alternate in uneven bands rather than a continuous line. These coastal cells shift subtly over time as erosion, sediment drift, and resonance exposure reshape the edge of the sea. At dusk, many of these flats and shallows glow faintly, light catching on mineral traces and shallow griefglass seams left behind by the Shattering.
Inland, the terrain rises quickly into sun-scorched bluffs and wind-carved mesas, creating a sharp transition between coast and interior. These elevated shelves fracture the land into navigable corridors and isolated pockets, limiting overland movement to a small number of maintained routes. Stone here is dry, brittle, and veined with trace griefglass deposits that refract light unpredictably, especially during longbright.
Travel along the Sunlash Coast is fastest and often safest by sea, though the waters demand constant attention. Coastal currents loop and shear in ways that defy expectation, sometimes returning vessels to familiar waters hours or days earlier than anticipated. Mariners do not rely on fixed buoys. Instead, they use floating sigils that can be repositioned as currents drift, rewriting safe passages in real time.
On land, hazards are less obvious but no less dangerous. Temporal echo zones appear intermittently, causing roads, structures, or entire districts to repeat the same span of time until disrupted by outside influence. Locals treat these sites with cautious respect. Interfering without purpose is considered not just unlucky, but an invitation to be caught in the echo yourself.## People & Culture
Sunlash culture prizes adaptability over tradition. While elders are respected, authority is rarely inherited; leadership is earned through competence, luck, and a willingness to make decisions under uncertainty.
Storytelling is a civic act here. Taverns, docks, and marketplaces host nightly recountings of events both recent and historical not to preserve them perfectly, but to test which versions endure. Contradictory accounts are expected and even valued.
Outsiders often mistake Sunlash folk for carefree or reckless. In truth, they are deeply pragmatic. When the past can loop and the future can fracture, survival depends on knowing when to hold fast and when to let go.
Power & Politics¶
Sunlash is governed by a loose Confederation of Harbors, each port-city maintaining internal autonomy while agreeing to shared maritime law and mutual defense. Decisions affecting the entire coast are made during seasonal Confluences, where delegates meet at rotating locations chosen by tide and weather.
Faction influence is visible but rarely overt. Rather than seizing control, factions in Sunlash invest in navigation rights, dock access, and information brokers. Political conflicts tend to play out through trade embargoes, manipulated shipping lanes, or the strategic revelation of inconvenient truths.
Trade & Resources¶
The Sunlash Coast is one of Velthuryn’s great trade arteries. Its exports include:
- Salt, dried fish, and sun-cured kelp
- Resonance-stabilized glassware
- Nautical charts updated weekly
- Memory-ink derived from tideborne griefglass sediment
Imports are equally vital: fresh water during drought cycles, hardwoods for shipbuilding, and legal arbitration services from inland states when disputes become too complex to resolve locally.
Sunlash merchants are notorious for contracts that include clauses for temporal anomalies. These are not jokes. They are insurance.
Faith & Folklore¶
Formal temples are rare along the coast. Instead, faith is practiced through ritual observance tied to natural cycles: sunrise oaths, tidefasts, and commemorations of days that no longer exist.
A persistent folk belief claims the sea “remembers correctly” even when the land does not. As a result, many Sunlash families commit important memories to tide-chants sung at specific coves, trusting the waves to carry them forward unchanged.
Children whisper about the Bright Return, a rumored phenomenon where a lost moment comes back whole, allowing someone to relive a single choice and make it differently. No confirmed case exists. Many still search.
Threats & Conflicts¶
Sunlash faces several ongoing dangers:
- Temporal Lock Zones: Areas where time loops endlessly, disrupting trade and trapping residents.
- Echo Smugglers: Criminal groups who exploit repeating days to move contraband unnoticed.
- Harbor Schisms: Political rifts between ports over whether certain anomalies should be stabilized—or preserved for profit.
The most feared threat is not invasion, but collapse of continuity. If too many loops overlap, entire sections of coast could become uninhabitable, not destroyed, but unable to progress.
Adventure Hooks¶
- A port city requests aid when its central market enters a three-day loop, trapping hundreds of civilians.
- The PCs are hired to escort a shipment whose delivery window exists only once every nine days.
- A faction offers to pay handsomely for proof that the Bright Return is real—or for evidence that it isn’t.
- A navigator claims to have charted a current that leads backward in time by minutes, not hours.
- A Confluence is disrupted when delegates arrive remembering different versions of the same vote.
